We look back...

What would David Sprüngli have said if someone had told him back in 1836 that his confectionery business would one day become one of the most renowned in the world and a leading Haut Chocolatier? The tale of Sprüngli’s success is as impressive as it is interesting.

He paved the way for this success story by purchasing the Vogel confectionery store on Marktgasse in Zurich in 1836. The company began making chocolate – a pioneering endeavour at the time – as early as 1845 under the name David Sprüngli & Fils. In 1859, the confectionery store opened on Zurich’s Paradeplatz, which later evolved into one of Europe’s most important shopping streets thanks to the new Bahnhofstrasse.

In 1961, Sprüngli relocated its manufacturing to Dietikon, for space and transport reasons. Here, Confiserie Sprüngli’s well-known and much-loved delicacies are freshly prepared by hand every day with the utmost attention to detail. They are subsequently sold in 30 stores throughout Switzerland, in several restaurants and via a global store for corporate customers. It is the combination of time-honoured recipes – handed down over decades – craftsmanship and peerless service that sets Sprüngli apart. The beating heart of the company for 190 years, however, has been its employees, who support it and demonstrate their dedication to its development every single day.

Over the decades, the company and its iconic products, including Luxemburgerli, the famous Truffes du Jour, exquisite grand cru chocolate, and fresh tarts and pastries, have been steadily perfected and passed on to the next generation. Today, Confiserie Sprüngli is run by Milan and Tomas Prenosil – the sixth generation of the founding family. It was they who established Sprüngli throughout Switzerland and, over the past few decades, demonstrated once again the symbiosis that can be created by pairing tradition with innovation.
